“We are not that nervous because we know that with Trump it is all about relationships,” said one veteran European diplomat who has been in DC since the Trump administration. “The logic of doing it at Heritage was not lost on us,” said Victoria Coates, a deputy national security advisor to former President Trump who is now a vice president at the think tank. The comments sent European diplomats into over-drive, eager to understand exactly what Trump meant. “If they are worried about how President Trump is going to react to them, they hold it in their hands to do something about it,” Coates said. But European diplomats are not only worried about NATO.

There were silk and glass butterflies. There was an entree inspired by a California roll and a performance by Paul Simon. On Wednesday evening, as the Bidens hosted Prime Minister Fumio Kishida of Japan and his wife, Yuko Kishida, at the fifth state dinner of the Biden administration, Dr. Jill Biden, wearing an evening dress from Oscar de la Renta, stood with her husband to greet their guests of honor at the North Portico. Designed by Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim, the dress flowed in a watery fade from sapphire blue to light silver and was covered in hand-embroidered floral geometric beading. There is no loneliness epidemic
  + stars: | 2024-04-07 | by ( Eliza Relman | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +17 min
With the report, a steady trickle of headlines about the epidemic turned into a firehose: "Loneliness is at epidemic levels and it's killing Americans" (USA Today); "This Epidemic of Isolation Is as Harmful as Smoking" (Bloomberg); "America's Loneliness Epidemic Comes for the Restaurant" (The Atlantic). There's one problem: The loneliness epidemic doesn't exist. Even the authors caution in their meta-analysis that "the frequently used term 'loneliness epidemic' seems exaggerated." Calling it a "loneliness epidemic," then, may be a bit like calling COVID a "sneezing pandemic." "There are many, many surveys that are just making up questions about loneliness and are not using the UCLA Loneliness Scale or some other validated loneliness scale," she says.

In 2020, Biden won the state by fewer than 21,000 votes, with no Green Party candidates on the ballot. Four years earlier, Trump carried Wisconsin by nearly 23,000 votes, with the Green Party’s Jill Stein earning more than 30,000 voters. When third-party candidates were added to the mix, both Biden and Trump saw their numbers fall by about 10 percentage points. “It really brings forward the idea that the two big parties just hand us candidates to choose from,” Anderson said. But Democrats have long viewed Stein’s campaign as one of the decisive factors in delivering Trump the state of Wisconsin and the presidency.

Opinion: Trump videos send wildly different messages

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. In a video promoting the Bible, Trump said, “Religion and Christianity are the biggest things missing from this country. … we need to bring them back.”On Good Friday, Trump posted a very different kind of video. It showed an image of President Joe Biden lying sideways and tied up in the bed of a pickup truck. “Robert F. Actor and comedian Mindy Kaling hosted the program, which ended at around 10 p.m., and late night host Stephen Colbert moderated a conversation with Biden, Clinton and Obama. Colbert acknowledged one protester and asked Biden about the U.S. role in ensuring a peaceful and prosperous future for both Israelis and Palestinians. Outside the New York venue Thursday, more than 100 pro-Palestinian protesters chanted slogans like "Biden, Biden, you're a liar," and waved Palestinian flags and signs with anti-war messages. Biden and Trump are polling neck-and-neck, with 46% of voters supporting Trump and 45% supporting Biden, according to a March poll by CNBC. During Thursday's moderated discussion, Colbert asked Clinton what he would say to voters who do not feel like the economy is strong.

Unlike Obama and Clinton before him, Biden is running against a candidate only a few years his junior. It was a twist on how Clinton answered a question about Dole's age during the second presidential debate in 1996. There is not much precedent for the event Biden's campaign is putting on Thursday. Obama, Biden and Clinton will inevitably go down memory lane during a discussion moderated by comedian Stephen Colbert. Aside from private conversations, Biden also often directs his top aides to follow up with Obama or Clinton on various topics of conversation.

With the announcement of his running mate, Silicon Valley attorney and entrepreneur Nicole Shanahan, Kennedy’s campaign will expand its ballot access. On the surface, this double dislike seems puzzling: Shouldn’t one of the two parties have figured out how to elevate a more popular general election candidate? Americans overwhelmingly want more than two political parties. But in a close race between the two unpopular frontrunners, Kennedy will almost certainly be a chaos factor. Kennedy — whose campaign is in many respects a product of this doom loop — is a deeply flawed messenger for change.

Three presidents and one mission: Beat Trump

CNN’s MJ Lee and Jeff Zeleny reported Wednesday that Obama was in the White House for a working visit just last week. Two Democratic presidents who won second terms are uniting to try to usher a successor, who is older than both of them, into the same rarified political air. And Clinton has been out of the White House for nearly a quarter of a century. But Biden was also a valuable ally for Clinton after the president’s impeachment over an affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. And after he became vice president, Biden developed a friendly and cordial relationship with Hillary Clinton, maintained by regular breakfasts at the vice president’s official residence in Washington.

Opinion: RFK Jr.’s VP pick is a missile aimed at Biden

CNN —Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s independent presidential campaign can’t win, but it could swing the presidency to former President Donald Trump. RFK Jr.’s namesake father was a Democratic US attorney general and a Democratic senator from New York. So was Joe’s son, RFK Jr’s nephew, Joseph P. Kennedy III. To believe that, one must ignore that Perot, like Clinton, was a change candidate; like Clinton, he was pro-choice, and like Clinton, Perot supported campaign finance reform. But you don’t need decades of experience and reams of data to see who RFK Jr’s bid hurts.

Mr. Trump has been schmoozing with donors at Mar-a-Lago, his private club and residence in Palm Beach, Fla., trying to lessen the financial disparity he faces against Mr. Biden. The figures do not include the funds that Mr. Biden pulled in after his State of the Union address on March 7. Mr. Katzenberg said the campaign’s fund-raising had “accelerated” as Mr. Biden and his surrogates had begun to hit the trail. In the 388-page report released last month, Hur concluded that Biden mishandled and improperly disclosed classified information after leaving the vice-presidency. But Hur said that he didn’t believe there was enough evidence to charge Biden with a crime. According to the transcript, Biden asks aloud when he was vice president, as he tried to recall timelines. “Remember, in this time frame, my son is either deployed or is dying,” Biden said, according to the transcript. The transcript shows investigators at times seeming to struggle to keep control, as Biden used up time with long answers.

Washington CNN —President Joe Biden met on Tuesday with leaders from the International Brotherhood of Teamsters as he tries to court the crucial union vote ahead of November. Biden is competing with former President Donald Trump for a Teamsters endorsement. Biden has already received one critical union endorsement: the United Auto Workers backed him during their Washington meeting in January. Biden has long presented himself as “the most pro-union president ever,” but an endorsement from union leadership doesn’t necessarily translate into support from rank-and-file members. Trump met with Teamsters leader Sean O’Brien at Mar-a-Lago late last year as well.

Robert Hur, who had been appointed to investigate whether Biden mishandled classified documents, wrote that the president couldn’t recall in an interview with prosecutors the date when his adult son, Beau, died of cancer. And Biden recalled the specific date that Beau died, although he briefly wondered aloud about the year as the conversation toggled between various events. “Oh, God, May 30th.”A White House lawyer interjected by saying, “2015.”“Was it 2015 he had died?” Biden asked. Beau died while Biden was serving as vice president, and his deep sorrow helped deter him from running for president in 2016, when Trump ultimately defeated Hillary Clinton. President Joe Biden clinched the Democratic presidential nomination Tuesday, NBC News projects, winning a majority of the necessary delegates and setting up what is expected to be a bitter, closely contested rematch with Donald Trump. By clearing the field for the 81-year-old Biden, Democrats have gambled that he remains the party's best shot at defeating Trump one more time. The general election campaign opens with Biden an underdog against an opponent who historians have ranked as the worst president in the nation's history. He ran for the party's nomination in 1988 and again in 2008 and never made headway with rank-and-file Democratic voters. Through sheer persistence, he is now finishing a presidential term while wrapping up his second party nomination in a row.
